What You Need To Know About Smoke Alarms
In the event of a residential fire, smoke alarms are your first line of defense. Smoke alarms, along with fire sprinklers, fire extinguishers and proper planning, play an integral role in ensuring that your family is fire safe.
Here are a few important tips on smoke alarms
- Smoke alarms should be installed outside of each bedroom and on each level of the home (including the basement)
- Make sure your smoke alarms have the ULC brand. The ULC marking ensures that the smoke alarm is approved by the Underwriters' Laboratories of Canada.
- Be sure to follow the manufacturer's installation instructions when installing a smoke alarm
- Always follow the manufacturer's directions for cleaning and maintaining your smoke alarm
- Change the batteries in your smoke alarm as recommended by the manufacturer's instructions
- Test your smoke alarm frequently to ensure that it is functioning properly
- Replace smoke alarms after 10 years
